Ancillary Task Album Cover - #3

#3 by The Script is their 3rd album and being released in 2012 it is there most current album to date. The band themselves are from Ireland and they cross between the indie and rock genre. From the cover itself it is quite stripped back and simplistic which is how I would describe the band’s music.

An aspect of this cover that I believe is really successful is the shape of the main pictures in the middle. In the shape of lead singer Danny, it consists of the two other band members, which I believe is such a unique and individual aspect. This idea could link into the fact the band are some what considered to be in the indie genre. The shape draws the viewer in, as you’re enticed by the unusual image and whether or not it is shaped to be something from a far which draws you in to realize that it is.

The colour scheme of the album was made by making the final cover in black and white then adding a soft sepia tint on top which is something I’m a fan off as it not only makes the edit in the middle seem more realistic as the image in full colour would look silly, but really reinforced that idea of enticing the viewer in with detail and with this colour scheme you cant contrast colours, you’re just left looking at the detail of shades and various tones.
We see two different fonts used within this cover; one which is the consistent font for the band (used on all albums and merchandise) and the name of the album has a different font. By keeping a consistent font represents a successful aspect for it creates this shared knowledge, people from a far could easily recognize the bands music or merchandise.

The last aspect, which I believe is the most successful aspect, is the symmetrical vibe given from the equal positioning of the composition of each image/text. The name given to the album links into the three different designs on the cover. Along with this there are 3 members in the band as we see three different men in the outline of lead singer Danny, this consistent theme of three really entices the viewer in along with the leading pathway created making the viewer read the cover from the bottom to the top.

Altogether I believe the design of The Scripts album shows a successful example of keeping something contemporary but still simple as you can see in the image. It’s a little too boring for my taste but I believe this is down to the lack of colour within the cover which is something I would incorporate in my own or use a more complex cover.
